What is the Process of Polishing Concrete
2018-11-20

In recent years, polished concrete is well-known due to the improvement of grinding techniques that allow for the creation of more attractive finishes. Polished concrete can transform existing concrete slabs into visually appealing surfaces that are both durable and easily cleaned. It is popular and suitable for commercial and industrial facilities.

Polished concrete needs to use lithium-based hardener to make the ground strong and durable. We can use a special hardness tester to test the hardness of concrete. When the Mohs reach to 7-8, the ground is strong and durable without scratches.

According to the needs of the site, you can add various colour to the floor and make it looks colorful and beautiful.

The process of polishing concrete is mainly divided into the following steps:

  1. Rough grinding and leveling: dry grinding with 60# 120# diamond metal grinding discs, grinding vertically and horizontally, and cleaning the ground dust.

  2. Increase hardness: spraying the lithium-based hardener on the surface of concrete, and coating on the ground repeatedly with dust pusher until the hardener is completely absorbed by the ground.

  3. Fine grinding: after hardening for more than 12 hours, polishing successively with #50 #100 #200 #400 resin-bond diamond pads. Please note that the dust must be cleaned up.

  4. Coloring: protect the non-colored parts firstly, and then repeatedly coat the concrete surface with dust pusher. Natural curing the floor about 24 hours until the color is completely dry.

  5. Further polishing: polishing with #800 #1500 or #3000 resin-bond diamond pads to achieve a high bright glossy floor.

  6. Fixation: spraying the curing agent evenly on the surface of concrete, and pushing it until it is fully absorbed by the ground and keeps moist for half an hour.

  7. High speed polishing: when the ground is not completely dry, polish with high speed polishing machine to achieve a super glossy finish.

All in all, polished concrete is a concrete floor that has been chemically treated and ground down to a smooth, shiny surface with progressively finer diamond tools. With the techniques of grinding and polishing, it’s easy to achieve a super flat, super glossy finish that is durable, easy to clean and maintain.
