Some Tips to Improve Your Concrete Floor Grinding
2019-03-15

If it’s the first time for you to grind a concrete floor, I’m sure you've realized that it can be a lot more complicated that it appears. There are so many variables that can affect the final results. Here we have compiled a short list of tips that address some of the most frequently asked questions regarding effective grinding. We hope these tips will help you during your floor grinding project.

First, make sure you are using the right diamond tooling with the appropriate bond hardness, for the floor you’re grinding. This can determine whether your grinding work is efficient or not. If you use the wrong diamond tooling, it will wear out prematurely. So you have to spend a lot more on tooling than you should, and it will take up a lot more of your time.

If your diamond tooling has glazed over or become ineffective, try to re-open the diamonds in a new part of the concrete. This can be especially effective when removing adhesives or coatings.

Throwing down some play sand onto the slab before grinding. This will increase the amount of debris in the work area, which in turn will help expose new diamonds for grinding, and act as an additional abrasive.

If you are using a Multi-surface Planetary grinder, rotating your machine from time to time to re-open your diamond tooling. Rotating concrete grinding machine is an action of changing the surface of the diamond tool, which help longevity of performance. This can extend the life of diamond tooling. This will also help to prevent scratches and inconsistent wear patterns.

5. Presoaking a very hard-trowel slab will help reduce surface tension as well as flush small aggregate and sand to the surface. Doing this will help to keep the diamond tools working effectively. Presoaking will also reduce the temperature of the concrete surface, helping with operational temperatures of the tooling. This is especially true in hotter climates or when the slab may be subject to warm working environments.

6. Before grinding, please remind to set your dust collector on a lower power. That will accumulate a little dust under the machine which will help open your diamond tooling. This way can also be very useful when removing a very ‘sticky’ adhesive. This helps to keep your tooling cleaner and performing their best.

Whether you’ve been grinding concrete for years or it’s your first day on the job, there’s always room to improve your skills so that when unexpected issues arise, you are prepared to deal with them effectively and efficiently.
