What Is the Difference Between PCD and Metal Bond Tools

Sep 14, 2026

When removing tough floor coatings or preparing a concrete surface, PCD and metal bond diamond tools are often considered for the same job, but they work in very different ways. The main difference is how they remove material. PCD tools use synthetic diamond particles bonded into cutting segments that act more aggressively on coatings, adhesives, epoxy and other hard-to-remove materials. Metal bond tools use diamond grit held in a metal matrix and are primarily designed for grinding the concrete, terrazzo or stone itself. Choosing between them depends less on which tool is “stronger” and more on what material is actually on the floor.

PCD removal tools are particularly useful when the main problem is a thick or stubborn coating. Epoxy, polyurethane, glue, paint and other floor coverings can quickly load or wear conventional diamond tooling, especially when there is a lot of material to remove. PCD cutters attack these materials aggressively and can remove heavy coatings at a high rate. They are often a good choice for the first stage of floor preparation, when the priority is to expose the underlying concrete rather than produce a refined grinding finish.

Metal bond grinding tools are better suited to grinding exposed concrete, terrazzo and stone. They use diamond grit embedded in a metal matrix, with the bond designed to wear and continually expose fresh diamond. Different bond hardnesses are important because the relationship between the tool bond and the floor hardness affects cutting performance. On hard concrete, a softer bond generally helps the diamonds stay exposed and maintain cutting action. On softer concrete, a harder bond can provide better tool life by slowing matrix wear. This is why the same metal bond tool can perform very differently on two floors that look similar at first glance.

The difference becomes especially important when a floor contains both a coating and concrete underneath. PCD can be effective for removing the bulk of a thick coating, while metal bond tooling can then be used to grind the exposed concrete and prepare the surface for the next stage. The tools are therefore not necessarily competing alternatives; in many floor preparation jobs, they serve different purposes. Using metal bond tools to remove a heavy coating can lead to rapid wear or reduced productivity, while using PCD for ordinary concrete grinding may not provide the control or surface refinement needed afterward.

In practical terms, choose PCD when fast removal of thick coatings, adhesives or other difficult surface materials is the main objective. Choose metal bond tools when you need to grind concrete, terrazzo or stone and control the cutting performance through grit and bond selection. The right choice also depends on coating thickness, concrete hardness, machine type, pressure and the required surface condition. Understanding what the tool is actually cutting is usually the best starting point for selecting the right diamond tooling.
